Alex Blackwood Writes :-

So Sorry to hear  of the sad passing of yet another colleague, this time so young. My sympathy goes to Gary's family. I first knew Garry when he joined Diligence as my "Junior Lecky" (3/O) back in 1986. Garry was fresh out of the RN and, having, so to speak, stepped over the wardroom threshold, took a couple of weeks to adjust to the RFA culture. We never sailed together again but our paths did cross on a Clarke Chapman RAS Rig course and also while we were both in different sections based in Bath at Carpenter House.

A sad loss RIP Garry.
Alex Blackwood.

Rich Haughton Writes :-

Absolutely stunned that we have lost another good man at a relatively early age and just before he intended to retire as well. My condolences to his wife and family.

I sailed with Gary on a number of occasions, both as fellow 3/Os and 2/Os and as his SEO. Every time was a joy as we were always on the same wavelength and worked well together, making an effective and happy team. He was always determined to get any task completed to the highest standard yet still have time for a laugh and a joke, a rare combination.

The last time we sailed together was on the Gold Rover as it went into it’s last refit. Although he never wanted the job of an SEO, he took the role on when I had to leave without relief and carried it out to great effect. He was a true professional and would always rise to any challenge.

There are many colleagues in the RFA but few friends. I am honoured that with Gary I had a true friendship with both of us knowing that the other would only be a shout away if help were needed.

Goodbye Gary, you will be sorely missed.
